A.R.T. Easter Seals UCP Program at Art Works

Yesterday Easter Seals UCP completed the training for A.R.T. The Trackers worked with the Artists and some even completed their paintings.

What’s A.R.T ? It’s a program where physically challenged folks use technology to communicate to someone who has been trained to put their ideas down on canvas or other mediums. Scroll down to read about this amazing story and program.

For those of us who participated in the training or just watched the process and the interaction, it was a feel good day! At the end of the day, Sarah Hutchenson loaded up the materials and put them in A.R.T’s new studio 150 at Art Works. And in the next week or so, the studio will be organized and ready for the making of more art.

Some of the paintings completed this week will be on exhibit in the Skylight Gallery on FOURTH FRIDAY (January 28th) and the exhibit continues through February 20, 2011.

ABOUT A.R.T.In his book Flying Colors, Tim Lefen tells about his introduction 10 years ago to a group of severely challenged students. None of them could walk and all lacked the use of their hands. Only one of them could talk. Lefen was facing the gradual loss of his eyesight and knowing the power of art, set out to enable the students to paint despite their physical difficulties. He developed the A.R. T. (Artistic Realization Technologies) program that makes use of technologies (computers, laser pointers and more) as instruments with which the students (aka artists) use to instruct trained assistants (aka trackers) to be their arms and hands in painting, photographing and sculpting.

Why does art make you feel good?

I look at images of art that people send us. And I walk through the halls of the art center and see new works of art. And looking at blogs and images that surround me, I am filled with joy or amazement or just a great feeling of bliss.

Why? What about you? Where you born this way? Wanting to be around art? Wanting to be immersed in it?

As for me, I just can't get enough. I am SO addicted! How about you?

Karung guni at Art Works

Don't miss this. Melody Gulick, resident artist at Art Works has created a Karung Guni on the fence at Art Works. Melody says:

Karung guni is a Malay phrase for "gunnysack". In Indonesia there are men that go out to gather recycling for a living/profit. In my case I am collecting unwanted items to be reused.

Recycling is not uncommon in Manchester including anyone from: households, businesses (well not so much for businesses, because the city does not allow businesses to recycle even though we pay a monthly recycle fee ), and individuals who collect aluminum cans and metal (including our metal Art Works sign) to cash in at the "Pocket Money" recycle center on the corner of Hull and 7th. And artists are major recyclers, as they have visions of transforming most anything into art.

In fact we see more and more mixed-media artworks in the galleries and are amazed by the creativity and uses of discarded materials.

Melody used a studio at Art Works to store her materials - plastic bags of various colors. She tore these in strips and during the months of September and October of this year, she spent a portion of each day weaving and crocheting the material into the fence.

The result is a image of crocheted trees to contrast the roughness of Art Works' parking lot and its industrial feeling. She says:

The three challenges to this installation are materials, time and a conviction that will carry me to the end. The use of only recycled materials are used on this installation.

It is a large project that will go around the north, west and south side of the parking lot. I would like to complete the project in a little over a month's time. Each day that goes by on a large project, one goes through a psychological process. I am sure many artists have been through this.

I decided to use the image of crocheted trees to contrast the roughness of the parking lot and its industrial feeling.

The project is to help inspire the idea that something can be made from anything ... and everything is beautiful if we look and try hard enough, hope and work for it.

One day's thoughts while at work:

"Hooks, rings, tunes similar to "Close Encounter of the 3rd Kind", old balloons melted from the sun, bubbled street paint, green moss find every available place to live, a feather from a pigeon and a fitting note that read...make a list of questions to send to general/members. Before Thanksgiving."

So now Earth Day Festival plans are taking shape in Manchester. Last year yielded five real, live green trees planted in front of Art Works on Hull Street. We tenderly watered the trees throughout the summer and pull the weeds from around the roots. No weed would compete for those long-awaited trees. Yeah Earth Day!

The next stage of the Karung Guni project is the slow removal. What goes up, must come down. It's part of the process!

March 2008 Art Shows & Receptions at Art Works

Art Works swings into spring on March 28th with opening exhibits and receptions to honor Women's History Month and Earth Day including:

CREATRIX by Tess LiVolsi Amoruso and Tess Sweet

This is a two-women show celebrating the divine feminine through photography and painting. Ms. Amoruso is a photographer and Ms. Sweet is a painter. They present a collection of work celebrating the many faces of the sacred feminine.

March All Media Show
Wolfgang Jasper (http://www.howldog.com/) juries this art show that features many artists from Richmond and Virginia. Submissions are accepted from any artist and any medium. GO FISH
The shad fish return to the James to spawn in April and this exhibit starting March 28th heralds their arrival and will be a featured destination at the Richmond’s Earth Day and Fish Festival on April 19th. It's Leap Year at Art Works!

We're leaping from one celebration to another on February 22nd . The opening reception will be on February 22nd, 7 p.m. – 10 p.m. with live music by the Robin Steel Blues Band. You'll see:

The 2008 Eggstravaganza Egg Art Exhibit
Richmond artists present egg-art for the annual Easter Seal Eggstravaganza. Awards will be presented for "Best Egg" and more on February 22nd.

The eggs will incubate at Art Works for one week until they are transported to William Jeffrey Jewelers for a preview party. They will finally hatch at the Easter Seals Eggstravaganza auction, at the Children's Museum, March 8th. This is the 4th year that Art Works and Richmond artists donated their time, talent and energy to support Camp Easter Seals.

WALKING ON PAPER by Clayton Singleton

Clayton Singleton comes to us from Norfolk, Virginia.

His work "is about transition…cycling from one place or phase to another…a continual transition whether physically, spiritually, mentally or emotionally. Mr. Singleton believes that " we are a reflection and a result of each other regardless of our differences. Our arts should explore, experience, then express life from our own viewpoints; creating until our experience has become our expression".

In working with the artist we have had some unusual requests for his exhibit: things mentioned where a sliding board and sand! So we are curious as to what exactly he has in store for us!


FEBRUARY ALL MEDIA SHOW
This art show features many artists from Richmond and Virginia. Submissions are accepted from any artist and any medium. Entries are accepted Feb. 15th & 16th at Art Works. The juror is Anne Hart Chay from Visual Arts Studio in Richmond. She will give a gallery talk and present awards at 7:30 pm on February 22nd.

THE MILTON SEARS EXHIBIT
Celebration Black History Month, Mr. Sears will present an engaging exhibit in the Skylight Gallery

TURN UP THE COLOR by Hugh Townsend Harris
Mr. Harris is a resident artist at Art Works and a gallery member. He exhibits his work in shows throughout the South. You will be surprised how he changes seemingly muted and mundane nautical subject matter into explosions of color.

EYES OF THE SOUL by Terry Smith
This soulful exhibit will be displayed in the Centre Gallery West.

RICHMOND WALDORF SCHOOL

The artistic achievements of Richmond's alternative education community will be featured in The Corner Gallery.
