THE EXHIBITS:

THE MID-ATLANTIC GROUP EXHIBITION

by Jason Louis Arkles, Charles Philip Brooks, Lee Johnson and Henry Wingate.

These works are united by the core principles of the academic training found at the teaching studios of Paul Ingbertson and Charles Cecil. The paintings, drawings, and sculptures, vary in medium, size, and style. This exhibit of meaningful, contemporary art represents the personalities and sensibilities of the individual artist within the high standards of traditional-studio training.

Jason Louis Arkles was born in Washington, DC and has since relocated to North Carolina. He has studied in Florence, Italy in the Charles H. Cecil Studio and is now the department head of the sculpture program there.

Charles Philip Brooks, born in North Carolina, studied in New England in the studio of Paul Ingbretson and with the renowned American Barbizon painter Dennis Sheehan. He is primarily a landscape painter. His work incorporates elements of impressionism and is firmly rooted in the American Barbizon / Tonalist tradition of landscape painting. He teaches painting in North Carolina and Virginia.

Lee Johnson began his artistic training with former pupil of Arthur Maynard, Betty Lou Totten. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Fine Art from New College of the University of South Florida. His interest in representational painting then led him to the atelier of Charles Cecil in Florence, Italy, where he studied and subsequently taught figurative and portrait painting for three years. Lee currently lives and paints in North Carolina. The focus of Lee's work is the human form, and his large body of work includes portraits, landscapes, individual figure paintings, drawings, and large-scale multiple-figure works.

Henry Wingate began his painting studies at the age of 28, after serving in the military as a Navy pilot for six years. He worked with the painter and teacher Paul Ingbertson for five years and with Charles Cecil in Florence, Italy for six months. His primary focus is painting people, figurative and portrait, though he also paints still-lifes and landscapes. He lives in Madison, Virginia, with his wife, Mary, and daughter, Agnes.
